Mick's images of Park Hill’s past go for auction

31 January 2023

AS a young man, photographer Mick Jones chronicled the changing face of Sheffield’s iconic Park Hill flats, where he grew up.

And now he is using some of his classic images of the flats and neighbouring Sheffield streets in the 1960s to raise money for our patient care.

Mick’s work was on display at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre through the run of recent sell-out hit Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the Richard Hawley musical based around the generations of people who lived in Park Hill.

He has now donated two of his canvases, three framed prints and three signed copies of his book View from the Hill to St Luke’s.

And interest in Mick’s work is so great that all the items have gone into a special online auction, which is live now on our eBay page and will reach its climax on Sunday, February 5 at 7pm.

Mick developed his interest in photography when he was studying graphic design at Sheffield College of Art in the late 1960s.

“As a young lad from the Park Hill council estate in Sheffield, I did not know one end of a camera from another,” he admits.

“I took lots of photographs and although the odd ones were used for my exams the vast majority were undeveloped and unseen.

“In 2017 I developed the images digitally and was astounded at the way they had turned out!”

Our Community Fundraiser Ellie Mathews commented: “We are delighted that Mick has decided to share some of these wonderful images with us.

“Like St Luke’s itself, they represent part of the fabric of Sheffield life and we are certain that the auction will prove to be a big success.”
