Wemmy and Corrie share their Three Peaks experience

Wemmy Ogunyankin and partner Corrie Bowers both know the excitement of completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, having taken part on behalf of St Luke’s in 2018.

“I do enjoy fitness but I had never done anything like this before,” said SEO assistant Wemmy.

“If I’m being honest it was hard and I don’t think I was prepared for how physically challenging it would be – you do need some muscle strength to be moving for such a long period of time.

“And I do have this big fear of going down hills so while most people found that part easier, I actually found it harder.”

Junior doctor Corrie added: “Get some decent walks in beforehand, hopefully with a good incline, and I think most averagely fit people would be able to manage it.

“Get out to the Peak District, do a few 10k walks and that should prepare you – in the end we both found we had enough in the tank to complete it!”

Wemmy and Corrie’s other best tip is to have plenty of food and drink in reserve – they had everything from sandwiches to cashew nuts, sweets and a good supply of water to keep them fuelled throughout the day.

“What I will say is that there’s nothing like the feeling of accomplishing every peak,” Wemmy said.

“We’ve always said we’d like to do a marathon one day and doing the Three Peaks gave us a bit of an insight into what that would feel like.

“The sense of pride and achievement was massive – and doing it for a charity like St Luke’s was an extra incentive to succeed.”
