Volunteer Jean celebrates her 90th birthday with surprise guest Sir Martyn

20 June 2018

Volunteer Jean Singleton celebrated her 90th birthday and more than 30 years of support for St Luke's by sharing her cake with a very special guest.

For there to join the party was St Luke’s patron and celebrated journalist and broadcaster Sir Martyn Lewis.

Retired nurse Jean has been volunteering for us since 1985, when she was one of the first people to join the drive to launch the now famous and award-winning chain of St Luke's shops throughout the city.

Today she still supports the retail operation, giving three days every week to stocking the shop in our main reception.

“I love chatting to the visitors, volunteers and staff that work here, they are all so welcoming,” said Jean.

“My nursing instinct is to help people in any way that I can, so chatting to the families of patients is very rewarding.”

And as one of the longest serving St Luke’s volunteers, Jean is also full of encouragement for anybody thinking of joining the team.

“Most people don’t realise all the different volunteer roles that we have here,” Jean explained.

“It’s a great way to make friends, learn a new skill and make a difference to the people that you see here every day. Everyone is friendly and welcoming.”
