Mum’s the words as Lindsey and Holly sign up for marathon challenge

13 March 2017

STOCKSBRIDGE mums Lindsey Fawcett and Holly Jones are swapping the school run for a tougher run as they prepare to compete in the Asics Greater Manchester Marathon.

The friends both lost their dads to prostate cancer, with Lindsey’s dad Jim spending his final days as a patient at St Luke’s.

It was seeing the standards of care that both Jim and the whole family received that inspired Lindsey to get into training for the marathon challenge.

And when she heard about the event, Holly was happy to get into training and join her friend on the road.

“Neither of us has ever done a full marathon before but having completed the Sheffield Half Marathon last year, we started doing longer runs together and we eventually started to talk about the possibility of signing up for a marathon,” said Lindsey.

“We booked places on the Manchester Marathon because we knew after the Sheffield Half that it would at least be a flatter course!”

Having maintained a regular training schedule throughout the winter, the pair are on target for a successful conclusion to the challenge on Sunday, April 2.

“We’ve managed 22 miles up to now so although the last four miles are the hardest, we’re hoping that adrenalin and the crowds will get us across the finish line on the day,” said Holly.”

And giving them that extra push will be the thought that every step is raising money for our patient care.

“The support my dad had was just amazing,” said Lindsey. “I couldn’t believe we had these facilities available and it was a real comfort to know that a place like St Luke’s exists.

“It was calm and dignified and the whole family were able to stay with him right through to the end.”
