St Luke’s Hospice’s has launched a new 24/7 palliative and end of life helpline, offering round the clock support to patients and families across Sheffield.
The service, delivered by St Luke’s, is designed to help people receive the right care at home, reducing avoidable admissions and providing reassurance during the most difficult time.
This new overnight service enhances St Luke’s 9am – 5pm specialist helpline, and is accessible for patients and family members receiving care from the St Luke’s Community Team.
Those accessing the helpline will have access to a team of experienced healthcare professionals, who can provide friendly advice, and offer guidance on managing symptoms such as pain, breathlessness, agitation and nausea.
Carers can also access advice about medication and care concerns, meaning they have access to a reassuring voice in the middle of the night.
St Luke’s Head of Nursing Services, Michelle Russell, said the service hopes to reduce the need for unnecessary hospital visits, as well as provide overnight support to patients and families affected by the diagnosis of a terminal illness.
“We’re extremely proud to open our overnight helpline, which is designed to help people stay where they feel most at home, with the right support around them.”
“It will also help ease the anxiety and exhaustion felt by patients and those caring for them when support feels unclear or hard to access.”
If you are a patient or family member currently receiving care from the St Luke’s Community Team, you can reach the 24/7 helpline by calling 0114 235 7494.
Please note, if you use this service and are not known to our team, we will not be able to offer support. In that case, please call NHS 111.
