The true spirit of the festive period came to St Luke’s Hospice as over 1,100 gathered on Sunday 7 December for the charity’s much-loved Festival of Light – a poignant tradition that has brought comfort and meaning to the Sheffield community for nearly 30 years.
Each December, the hospice gardens are transformed into a Winter Wonderland of twinkling lights – with each light dedicated to the memory of St Luke’s patients and loved ones.
Leading the celebrations this year was BBC Look North presenter and St Luke’s supporter Tom Ingall, who was joined on stage by St Luke’s Senior Chaplain, Canon Mike Reeder for the moment of reflection and remembrance.
And in an extra special moment, leading this year’s light switch on was the family of Jenine Morris, a beloved member of the St Luke’s team for 13 years, who died earlier this year.
The 2025 Festival of Light, which was sponsored by Saxton Mee, also included festive music from Oughtibridge Brass Band and singer Bethany Pashley, as well as a live performance from St Luke’s Singing Group of their very own original song, ‘A Beautiful Place’.
Adding to the seasonal atmosphere, there was festive food stalls, mulled wine and mince pies, while guests could also decorate a candle bag in memory of loved ones and see their names in St Luke’s Book of Remembrance.
St Luke’s Event Manager, Lucy Mills, said: “Festival of Light is loved by St Luke's supporters and for many, it is the start of the festive season. It's a time for us all to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones. Every light represents a story, a memory and someone special.”
“It’s an honour to be involved in such a beautiful and poignant event for the Sheffield community, and one that each year raises thousands towards our patient care. This year, we are delighted to announce that the 2025 Festival of Light has raised over £55,000.”
The names of all those remembered will remain in the Book of Remembrance in the Hospice Chapel over Christmas and throughout 2026, and can also be viewed online at www.festival-of-light.org.uk.
The celebration of loved ones continues with the St Luke’s Service of Celebration and Remembrance at Sheffield Cathedral on Sunday 14 December. To find out more and register your attendance, visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/service-of-remembrance.
