St Luke’s brings Hospice Care Week to the heart of Sheffield

03 October 2025

St Luke’s will host a special one-day event at the Sheffield Winter Garden on Wednesday 8 October to mark Hospice Care Week.

Running from 9am to 4pm in the Winter Garden’s central atrium, the event celebrates this year’s central theme of: ‘Hospice Care is More Than You Think’.

The St Luke’s team will be on hand throughout the day to chat about our services, answer any questions and share simple ways people can support. Visitors can also join in interactive myth-busting activities that challenge common misconceptions about hospice care.

An interactive stand will showcase a recording of “A Beautiful Place” - an original song by our Patient and Family Support Singing Group - highlighting the positive impact of our social-prescribing activities.

The event will also shine a spotlight on some of our latest services, including the new Children’s Bereavement Service and our expanding community-based outreach sessions.

Emma Baldwin, St Luke’s Executive Lead for Care, hopes visitors will leave the event having learned something new - and inspired to share that knowledge with someone who might benefit from it.

“We are delighted to bring Hospice Care Week to such a central Sheffield landmark,” she said.

“Hospice care is more than you think, and St Luke’s care is more than just healthcare – we’re a charity too. Just 23% of our running costs are covered by government funding, meaning this year alone we need to raise £11million plus to fill the gap.”

“We also want to spread the word that 88% of the people we care for are supported in their own home or care home, and that we provide social-prescribing services to meet practical, social and emotional needs for patients and their families.”

Emma added: “We hope everyone who visits will learn something new - whether it’s about our services, the ways they can get involved, or how to share our message with someone who might need us. Even simple actions like telling a friend about St Luke’s, visiting one of our shops, signing up to our lottery or volunteering can make a real difference.”

Hospice Care Week, led by Hospice UK, takes place every October to celebrate the vital role of hospices nationwide and to ensure everyone can access the best possible end-of-life care.
