A NEW bed funded by the Scarborough Group Foundation is giving our patients greater comfort and time to share special moments with their families and loved ones.
The bed - funded by a £10,000 donation from the Foundation - offers the opportunity for closer contact with the patient as well as special features to enhance comfort.
“If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that time with family has never been so precious,” said our Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak.
“Being close to a loved one when they are poorly or in pain, holding a patient’s hand in an attempt to feel closer to them, is a natural way to bring comfort and ease anxiety at the most difficult of times.
“Increasingly, our nursing and medical staff have noticed it is not uncommon to see people sleeping in chairs or try and squeeze onto the existing single beds in order to remain close to a loved one but this new bed actually makes it easier for them to share those special moments in comfort.”
The multi-functional medical bed allows multiple people to lie, rest and gather together without impacting on a patient’s safety, space and comfort.
With a touch of a button, it is able to expand from a space-saving single bed into a comfortable double bed so a patient can be close to their family member, creating a safe way in which to enables families with young children to spend precious time together whilst still ensuring the patient’s safety is a priority.
It will support the health and wellbeing of the patient’s family, allowing them to reconnect both physically and emotionally with their loved one.
“Even with the current restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been able to maintain visiting throughout, which is something we are very proud of,” said Joasia.
“Having this very special bed at St Luke’s enables us to ensure we are fulfilling our values and being compassionate, helping patients safely receive the care they need and find comfort and solace in the arms of those they hold dear.”
The Scarborough Group Foundation is the charitable arm of Yorkshire based property development and investment business Scarborough Group International.
The privately-owned McCabe family business has donated substantial sums over many years to charitable organisations across Sheffield, including St Luke’s, Weston Park Hospital, Breast Cancer Care, St Wilfrid’s Centre, the Children’s Hospital, Sheffield University for new Neurological research projects, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and others.
Scott McCabe, Trustee of the Scarborough Group Foundation, said: “On behalf of the Scarborough Group Foundation, we are delighted to be able to assist St Luke’s by funding this Cuddle Bed.
“The benefits that the bed will bring aligns with a key mission of the Foundation to assist people and families that are going through difficult times.”
