THEY started with a hair raising challenge…and now their efforts have raised almost £21,000 for St Luke’s.
The Slaphead Fundraisers – all members of the Frecheville Community Sports and Social Club – started supporting us back in 2008 when they all shaved their heads at the club in solidarity with friend Roger Hobson, who had been diagnosed with cancer and was worried about losing his hair.
Since then the group has raised an amazing £20,800 for St Luke’s in memory of Roger and other much missed friends with a host of activities, including the annual Slaphead Golf Open Day, which is held at Birley Wood Golf Club.
And their most recent effort, a charity cricket match, raised a further £2,000 for St Luke’s and marked the 60th anniversary of the sports and social club.
An extra link with the charity was that St Luke’s volunteer Shirley Hobson - along with husband Brian - both died recently and were great supporters of the Slapheads group and of Frecheville Club.
As a tribute to their dedication the sports ground where the charity cricket match was played has now been renamed The Hobson Bowl.
“The endless enthusiasm of the Slapheads is an inspiration to anybody thinking of joining our fundraising supporters,” said our Community Fundraising Manager Megan Senior.
“Their lives have been touched by St Luke’s in many different ways and their continued dedication is something that every St Luke’s patient benefits from.”
