Volunteer Barbara 'doesn't let anything stand in her way'

Volunteer Barbara was born profoundly deaf but she’s never allowed that to stand in her way… and she certainly doesn’t let it affect her support for St Luke’s.

Barbara has provided Deaf Awareness Training at Clifford House, sessions which can be tailored to suit any group and which cover areas such as communication, body language, lip reading and other techniques.

She is also a volunteer at our Crystal Peaks shop, helping out with a couple of shifts per week. Her many activities both on the shop floor and behind the scenes include steaming, sorting and processing clothes, cleaning and doing window displays and merchandising stock.

Barbara feels she is part of the St Luke’s Crystal Peaks team and that she is doing something useful. And she is adamant that her own disability is absolutely no barrier
to any part of her life – and certainly has no impact on her time with St Luke’s.

As she explains: “It’s difficult taking the first step, but having a disability is nothing to be ashamed of, everybody can do something and there is always something to do.”
