Volunteers Sharon and Fran celebrate skills success

30 May 2018

VOLUNTEERS Sharon Tose and Fran Crawley are celebrating after developing their skills with the support of St Luke’s and White Rose Beauty Colleges.

After 20 years of caring for her father, Sharon came to St Luke’s first as a volunteer on our In Patient Centre and then in the Active Intervention Centre.

Retired midwife Fran wanted to carry on in some kind of caring position and so volunteered on the IPC and then in support of the community team.

When offered the opportunity to enrol on a Level 2 Diploma in Complementary Therapies, funded and provided by Sheffield’s White Rose Beauty Colleges, both Sharon and Fran said yes.

The College has been established as a Centre of Excellence, offering an extensive range of courses in Beauty Therapy, Nail Services, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Massage Therapy, Sports Massage and Hair and Media Make-up.

And after completing the course successfully Sharon and Fran are now able to go out into the community and offer such services as massage therapy, reflexology and aromatherapy using pre-blended oils.

Their studies have also covered such areas as healthy eating and wellbeing, business awareness and principles and practice of complementary therapies.

A delighted Fran says the course has offered her a phenomenal amount of information which she is now enjoying sharing with patients, providing  relaxation and relieving anxiety.

“The training enables you as a volunteer to develop and broaden your role,” she explained.

Sharon added: “So many patients have never in their life had a massage - they’re amazed at how relaxed it can make them feel.”
