"To make someone smile or improve their day is what I believe volunteering should be about."

In between studying for his MSc, Richard also volunteers in our IT & Tech Support cafés at Clifford House, where he teaches our clients how to get to grips with all aspects of technology. We asked him a few questions about his experience as a volunteer.

How did you find out about volunteering at Clifford House and what made you want to sign up?

I moved back to Sheffield last July and have been searching for a new volunteer project since. Previously, I ran a project for children who had recently experienced multiple traumatic bereavements, but sadly had to leave when I moved back home to be around my family (my sister in law had just had twins and I wanted to be closer to them). 

I am from Dore and was intrigued by Clifford house and so started to do some research. It stole my heart as my Grandad has Alzheimer’s and a place like this would be perfect for him but I didn’t know they existed! 

I knew straight away it was a project I wanted to be a part of, especially with it being in the beginning stages of its development. To make someone smile or improve their day is what I believe volunteering should be about. 

What were you hoping to get out of volunteering and has that happened?

I am currently studying my MSc in Developmental Psychology and so I am very interested in health. I wanted to meet new people, gain experience, and make a difference to someone’s life. I feel I have achieved all of the above and more! The people I have met are inspiring and friendly. I couldn’t have asked for a better volunteering experience. 

What would you say to encourage other people to volunteer with St Luke’s?

Whether you are looking for experience towards your degree, or wanting to make a positive impact on someone else’s life, you must volunteer here! The staff are friendly and supportive. Every week there is something to get involved with, and just knowing you’re part of providing a happy environment for those who will really benefit from it makes it an incredibly rewarding experience.
