Help us be there for Sheffield for years to come

Leaving a gift in your Will to St Luke’s

As an independent, local charity, we need to raise millions each year, just to continue providing the care needed to so many people in our community. The gifts we receive in Wills are a crucial part of our charitable funding - without them, we simply could not continue to exist as we do.

Did you know that gifts in Wills pay for the care of 1 in 6 of our patients?

Supporting us in this way is a powerful gesture that ensures our vital palliative care is there for those who need it, for many generations to come. A thoughtful decision made now will help to ensure that future generations of Sheffield families can be supported by St Luke’s, should they ever need our specialist care and support during their lifetime. It is a gift made now, which costs nothing in your lifetime, but can help your support live on, not only for St Luke’s but for the people of our incredible city.

We realise that, rightly so, those close to you will always come first. After considering loved ones in a Will, many people choose to also leave a charitable gift. Leaving a gift to St Luke's in your Will enables you to support a local charity, without a penny having to be donated now.

How to leave a gift in your Will

Your gift could help more families like Teresa's

Teresa's story

As well as helping people with a terminal diagnosis to live their lives as independently as possible, St Luke's also support people to have a dignified and pain-free death in their own home, if that's what they want. Although this isn't something many people like to think about, Teresa's story below about her dad's care at St Luke's, highlights just how important this can be for patients and their families.

Teresa's dad, Terence Bright, was 85 years old and battling against the final stages of cancer, diabetes, COPD and Bright's Disease when he was referred to St Luke's.

"As a family, we had experienced death before - my mum had died suddenly and my sister had leukaemia and died quickly, but I wanted my dad to have a chance to be prepared and that's exactly what St Luke's gave him. They didn't lie to him, he knew what was coming but I think he was just happy to be comfortable at that stage."

"It might sound a strange thing to say but Dad's death was exactly how you would want it to be. We've all got to die, but we didn't want Dad to die full of tubes and needles - in fact, if there can be such a thing, he had a really nice death"

"It meant so much seeing my dad calm, happy and safe and not at all anxious or frightened and I remember thinking that if this is death, I'm not afraid at all."

"With St Luke’s support I had never seen dad calmer, happier or more comfortable and ready for what was coming – he no longer had any fear of dying whatsoever."

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions and concerns regarding Wills.

Making a Will ensures that your wishes are carried out after you die. If you don’t have a valid Will, your estate will be distributed as directed by the rules of intestacy, which may not meet your needs or those of your family. For more information on the financial reasons to make a Will, see the Gov.uk website.

It’s important to get independent advice from a solicitor or a professional Will writer when making or updating your Will. To find a solicitor local to you, visit The Law Society website.

Download our guide of things you will need to consider and discuss with your family and friends before meeting with a solicitor.

The most common gifts we receive are for a specific cash amount (pecuniary gift) or a percentage share of an estate (residuary gift). We also benefit from other gifts, like specific items (e.g. paintings, jewellery etc.) or gifts in trust. Your solicitor or professional Will writer will be able to advise you on which gift you would like to leave to St Luke’s.

The most important information to include is our name, address and registered charity number along with the type of gift you wish to leave to St Luke’s:

St Luke’s Hospice
Little Common Lane
Sheffield
S11 9NE

Registered charity number 254402.

Your solicitor or professional Will writer can help you to add a form called a codicil to your existing Will. It is important to always ask a solicitor or professional Will writer to make changes to your Will, if the changes aren’t made correctly you could invalidate your Will.

No – gifts in Wills come in all shapes and sizes. By leaving a legacy, you will be making a real difference and ensuring we’re there for future generations.
