Clive’s year of Captaincy in support of our 55th year

A dedicated Sheffielder and St Luke’s supporter is marking both a personal milestone and a historic year for us, as he spends his Captaincy year raising funds in memory of his daughter and wife.

Clive Downing is halfway through his year as Captain at Hillsborough Golf Club, using the role to honour the lives of his daughter, Faye, and wife, Jayne, while supporting St Luke’s during our 55th year of caring for Sheffield.

Throughout his Captaincy, Clive is raising funds for two charities close to his heart. Money raised will be shared between St Luke’s - who cared for Faye at the end of her life - and Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of his wife, Jayne.

Faye was just 29 years old when she died from breast cancer in 2022, leaving behind her two young children, Freddie and Marnie. Jayne was also unwell at the same time, making St Luke’s support invaluable to the whole family during an incredibly difficult period.

Clive’s Captaincy runs throughout 2026 - a year that also marks our 55th anniversary. A member of Hillsborough Golf Club for 50 years, Clive is currently teeing up plans for his Charity Golf Day on Friday 10 July, alongside several shotgun-start competitions across the season and a Race Night on Friday 18 September.

The Charity Golf Day is shaping up to be a standout event in the club calendar, bringing golfers together for a full round of competition followed by food, entertainment and an auction. With prizes generously donated by local businesses and supporters, the day will combine friendly rivalry on the fairways with a shared determination to raise vital funds for local causes.

Clive’s Captaincy year builds on an already impressive fundraising journey. To date, he has raised almost £12,000 for St Luke’s through previous Golf Days, sponsorship and personal challenges, including the Sheffield 10k and the Percy Pud run.

It is all Clive’s way of giving back for the care Faye received — care he describes as “second to none”.

“It was the attention to detail,” says Clive. “St Luke’s looked after me as well as they did Faye. It’s not just care for the patient – it’s for the whole family too.”

“I knew of St Luke’s when I was younger, but I never thought it would be a place I needed. Let alone for my wife and daughter to be poorly at the same time.”

Following Faye’s death, Clive decided to embark on his fundraising journey as a way to stay connected to the cause and to channel his grief into something positive. His first challenge was the Sheffield 10k in 2022 — something he says helped him cope mentally.

“I could lock myself away and do nothing,” he explains. “But fundraising keeps me going. It gives me focus, motivation, and a reason to keep moving forward.”

Alongside raising funds, Clive is also committed to keeping Faye’s legacy alive by continuing to share her message about early detection and self‑advocacy.

“Faye’s story shows that shows that no matter how young you are, cancer knows no boundaries,” says Clive. “Her message was to speak up, push for referrals if you don’t feel listened to, and get the right support. She always said: ‘touch, look and check - you know your body best.’”

55 years of care

As we mark our 55th year, we’re choosing to speak more openly and confidently about the importance of hospice care - what it really is, why it matters, and the difference it makes to families every single day.

For 55 years, St Luke’s has been part of Sheffield’s story. We’ve supported thousands of people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives, offering expert care that brings comfort, dignity and choice when it matters most.

This anniversary isn’t about looking back. It’s about making sure this care is still here for the next generation.
