“We’re like a little family” – Clare’s message to others to volunteer with St Luke’s

After more than seven years of volunteering with St Luke’s, Clare Needham is encouraging others to take the leap – and discover the same sense of belonging she has found.

The 51-year-old first joined as a volunteer in our City Road shop, before moving to the new Darnall shop when it opened earlier this year. Since then, she has helped build lasting friendships, supported her local community, and become a familiar face to customers and fellow volunteers alike.

Clare was inspired to start volunteering following her own experience of hospice care, after seeing the support her dad received at the end of his life.

“It’s my way of giving something back and saying thank you,” she explains.

“My favourite thing about volunteering with St Luke’s, by far, is the people. We’re like a little family where everyone gets on and has a laugh.”

No two days in the shop are the same. Clare spends her time on the till, speaking with customers, sorting donations, and supporting the Information Hub – a welcoming space inside the shop where local people can connect with vital support and advice from our team.

Volunteering two shifts a week, she often offers extra support by covering for others when needed. As a long-standing volunteer, she also helps to “buddy” new starters, offering guidance and a friendly face as they settle in.

And for anyone considering volunteering themselves, Clare has a simple message:

“Just do it – there’s nothing to lose,” she says.

“You can build skills and experience for your CV – especially if you’re younger – but it’s also about meeting new people, enjoying yourself and making friends. The team are so supportive, and they’re really flexible around your needs.”

St Luke’s Volunteering Team Leader, Leah Johnson, says that without volunteers like Clare, St Luke’s simply couldn’t do what they do.

“As a charity, St Luke’s depends on the generosity of volunteers to keep providing compassionate care across Sheffield.”

“Every volunteer plays a part – whether that’s raising funds, supporting patients and families, or helping our shops thrive. Thank you simply isn’t enough.”

She added that there are a wide range of flexible opportunities available across the city – but there is a particular need for more people to get involved in Darnall.

“If you’re inspired by Clare’s story, our Darnall shop and Information Hub are currently looking for more volunteers to join the team,” says Leah.

“Whether you have a few hours to spare, a day to give, or are looking for a longer‑term commitment, there’s a place for you – and you’ll be making a real difference to people in your local community.”

“We also have opportunities ranging from supporting in St Luke’s other charity shops and Donation Centre, to helping at events, collections, or even volunteering at the hospice itself. Whatever your skills or experience, the Volunteering Team will help find a role that’s right for you.”
