Support St Luke’s via philanthropic giving
Philanthropic giving is a personal decision, and we’re grateful to everyone who supports our work in this way. If you’re looking to donate a large gift, please get in touch with our Fundraising Team today.
Why become a philanthropic donor with St Luke’s?
Philanthropic donors help make extraordinary care possible. Your generosity allows us to be there for people in Sheffield living with terminal illness, and their families, during some of the most difficult times of their lives – always at no cost to them.
UK philanthropy is also supported by generous tax reliefs to encourage giving. Depending on the way you give, you may be able to increase the value of your donation to St Luke’s or reduce certain tax liabilities, such as Income, Capital Gains or Inheritance Tax.

How your support makes a difference at St Luke’s
Family suite
Philanthropic giving supported the creation of St Luke’s dedicated family suite – a special space providing a comfortable and supportive environment for patients and their loved ones. With sleeping facilities, a bathroom, seating area and a self-contained kitchen, the suite offers families a place to stay overnight in greater comfort, spend meaningful time together and participate more fully in their loved one’s care.
Patient minibus
Philanthropic giving helped St Luke’s introduce a fully accessible minibus, providing free transport for patients and family members across Sheffield. The service offers door-to-door travel to our Hospice and Social Prescribing site, helping people attend appointments, enjoy day activities and reduce reliance on NHS or public transport. Crucially, it removes transport as a barrier, making care accessible for all.
Our work that currently needs funding
Every large philanthropic gift helps us keep our promise that no one in Sheffield faces terminal illness alone, providing the care, comfort and dignity people depend on at the end of life. Your donation could fund:
24-hour specialist palliative care for up to 20 patients at our In Patient Centre, providing vital pain and symptom management.
Community care and pain relief for people at home in Sheffield, helping patients stay independent for as long as possible.
Counselling and support for patients, their families and loved ones following the diagnosis of a palliative condition.
A 24/7 helpline offering guidance and a listening ear for our patients and their families during difficult moments.
Therapies to help patients achieve their personal goals, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and wellbeing support.
Specialist art therapy sessions for those affected by illness, treatment, trauma, bereavement and mental health challenges.
Practical, wellbeing, spiritual and social support for patients, carers and their families, including cookery, crafts, singing, dancing, gardening yoga and more.
Bereavement counselling and support for relatives, friends, children and carers following the loss of a loved one.
Social work and practical support for individuals with palliative care needs to ensure they have the support they need.

About St Luke’s – Sheffield’s Hospice
At St Luke's, we look after anyone affected by a terminal illness across Sheffield, at any stage of their journey, and their loved ones too.
Patients are cared for in the place that best suits their needs – most often in their own homes, where they feel most comfortable. There, they can receive support, pain relief, and in some cases, help to die at home, if that’s what they want. For others, 24-hour intensive palliative care is given on our In Patient Centre to help with pain and symptom management. Alongside clinical care, patients can access non-medical support through our social prescribing services.
Everything we do is made possible by over 300 members of staff, a team of more than 1,000 volunteers, and the generosity of the people of Sheffield. Just 23% of our running costs are covered by NHS funding, meaning St Luke's has to raise over £11 million to continue providing our services across Sheffield.
Our impact last year
We cared for around 6,000 people, including nearly 1,800 patients, their families and carers.
More than 300 people received 24-hour specialist palliative care at our In Patient Centre.
Over 6,000 visits were made to patients in their own homes or care homes across Sheffield.
7,300+ people used our Social Prescribing service to access practical, social and emotional support.
650+ bereaved relatives attended counselling sessions with St Luke’s after the loss of a loved one.
Fundraise via Trusts and Foundations
Trusts and Foundations play a vital role in supporting St Luke’s. Their funding enables us to deliver essential care, invest in the specialist equipment our teams rely on, and drive forward projects that enhance every stage of the patient and family experience. This support ensures we can continue offering the compassionate, high‑quality care our community depends on.

FAQs for philanthropists supporting St Luke’s
A philanthropist is someone who chooses to donate significant financial support to causes they care about. For many people, philanthropy is about creating positive change and supporting work that reflects their values.
Regular, smaller charitable donations often support a charity’s day-to-day work, while philanthropy usually involves larger gifts that help charities plan ahead, develop long-term services and reach more people over time.
Philanthropy helps us look beyond today. Larger gifts allow us to invest in care, people and new ways of supporting patients and families, so we can continue being there for Sheffield, now and in the years to come.
Philanthropy in the UK is shaped by a strong culture of charitable giving and a supportive tax system. UK philanthropists can give in several tax-efficient ways, including Gift Aid, donating shares, giving through trusts or foundations, or using a donor-advised fund (DAF).
At St Luke’s, we work with UK philanthropists to make giving as straightforward and meaningful as possible. Our Fundraising Team can talk through the options and help you find an approach that feels right for you.
Philanthropic giving in the UK is supported by generous tax reliefs. This means more of your money can go to St Luke’s, or you can reduce the tax you pay, depending on how you choose to give. The tax benefit depends on whether you donate through Gift Aid, Payroll Giving, assets like shares or property, or through your Will.
Yes, if your employer or pension provider offers a Payroll Giving scheme. Payroll Giving allows UK philanthropists to donate straight from their salary or pension before tax is taken, which means they receive tax relief immediately. The tax relief you get depends on individual tax rates.
Yes. Donating shares, land or property can be a very tax-efficient way to give for UK philanthropists. You can claim Income Tax relief on the value of the gift, and any Capital Gains Tax that would normally apply is removed.
Yes. Philanthropy in the UK allows you to leave a gift to charity in your Will, helping support causes that have mattered to you throughout your life. Many people choose this as a way to make a lasting difference, while also reducing the amount of Inheritance Tax their estate may pay.
Yes. UK limited companies can reduce their Corporation Tax bill by making charitable donations. This includes gifts of money, equipment, trading stock, land, property or shares in another company.
The value of the donation can usually be deducted from the company’s profits before tax is calculated. This makes philanthropy an effective way for businesses to support causes they care about.
No, you don’t need to be an expert to give philanthropically. Our role is to help you understand your options clearly and connect you with the right information when needed. We always recommend speaking to a financial or tax adviser for personal advice, but we’re very happy to explain how different types of giving work in practice.
