Ways to give in memory of a loved one
Funeral and remembrance collections
Asking for donations in lieu of flowers at a funeral or remembrance event is a thoughtful way to honour the life of a loved one, while also raising vital funds for St Luke’s.
St Luke’s can provide personalised donation envelopes featuring your loved one’s name, making it easy for your family and friends to donate. You can place them on seats or offer them to guests as they arrive or leave the service. The envelopes also allow donors to add Gift Aid where eligible, increasing the value of each donation at no extra cost to you or them.
A tribute page is a unique way to celebrate the life of someone special, especially for those unable to attend the funeral. Through an online tribute page, your family and friends can donate, share memories and leave messages. After the service, you can also add any offline funeral donations to your total tribute fund. The page can be kept open indefinitely, so you can add messages on birthdays or anniversaries, and if you choose to do any additional fundraising, this can be added to the page too.
If you’d like to ask a funeral director to help with collecting funeral donations in memory, they’re always happy to help. You can share our contact details with them, and our teams are here to assist them if needed.

Fundraising in memory of a loved one
Many people who have experienced the wonderful care given to their loved one by St Luke’s decide to support our work by fundraising in their memory and celebrating their life. Whether you join one of our events or organise your own, our team is on hand to help you make it happen.
We have a varied events calendar with many different challenges you can take on. Once you’ve chosen an activity, you can fundraise in memory of your loved one. We recommend using JustGiving, which you can easily share online with your family and friends, or we can provide paper sponsor forms. If you have a tribute page set up for your loved one, we can add any money raised to your page for you.
From coffee mornings to sponsored walks, golf days to bike rides, there are countless ways to raise money in memory. St Luke’s Community Fundraising Team is here to help you plan, promote and manage all kinds of fundraising activities.
You might already have an idea, such as running a marathon, organising a quiz, hosting a ball or taking on an open-water swim. Share your plans with us by completing our online fundraising registration form. Alternatively, you can contact us at fundraisingevents@hospicesheffield.co.uk or call 0114 235 7495, and we’ll help you make it a success.
Celebrating a birthday, engagement, wedding, anniversary or any other special occasion? You could ask guests to make donations in memory of someone special, instead of giving you a gift, dedicating your celebration to a loved one while supporting St Luke’s.
We could also help you personalise your event with St Luke’s branded cards and pin badges, as well as set up an online tribute page for you to share on your social media, making it simple for your friends and family to donate.
We’d love to hear about your upcoming celebration and see what we can do to support you. Let us know your plans by completing an online fundraising form, getting in touch at fundraisingevents@hospicesheffield.co.uk, or calling 0114 235 7495.
Donate in memory
Donating directly to St Luke’s is another great way to remember a loved one. By giving in their name, you are helping us support other patients and families across Sheffield who are facing the same need for care, comfort and companionship.
St Luke’s is dedicated to providing the best possible care and support for people living with advanced and often complex illnesses, as well as their families and carers. Setting up a monthly donation helps us continue this care for others who need it.
£6 a month could help our Bereavement Team provide counselling and ongoing support for relatives and loved ones.
£12 a month could support community nurses delivering vital care and pain relief for people in their own homes.
£20 a month could contribute to the ongoing cost of 24-hour specialist care for patients on our In Patient Centre.
Every donation, whatever the amount, helps us support more patients and families across Sheffield.
Are you a UK taxpayer? If so, don’t forget to tick the Gift Aid box when making your donation to boost your donation by 25p for every pound at no cost to you. As NHS funding covers only a small portion of our running costs, every extra pound raised helps us be there for more people in Sheffield, every day.
In memory of Lynne – Alice’s story
Since 2016, 25-year-old pharmacy student Alice, along with her family and friends, has raised over £20,000 for St Luke’s in memory of her mum, Lynne. Through a tribute page, they continue to fundraise and remember her life together.
“The care my mum received from St Luke's was amazing and helped her keep her dignity during the hardest times. There are so many examples of staff going above and beyond, from painting her nails to going out to buy her favourite fish fingers when she fancied them.
I just can’t thank them enough for everything they did for her, as well as myself and my family, answering any questions we had openly and honestly. There is so much support available even after you’ve lost someone, and I know I can turn to that when the time is right for me.
When it came to fundraising, I was hesitant at first, but once we started planning activities, I really enjoyed it. It kept me busy and gave me something to focus on during a difficult time.
Our first event was a charity football day, and St Luke’s Fundraising Team were always there to help when I needed it. The sun shone, and we raised more than £2,800, which was then match-funded by Halifax, taking the total up to £5,700.
Since that first event in Mum’s name, we’ve also taken part in two Night Strider events, organised cake sales, fundraised at work, and my friend Molly ran the Sheffield half-marathon.
The tribute fund is also a great way to keep all the memories of Mum and our fundraising achievements in one place. It’s so nice to see the comments and photos from everyone, and it’s also somewhere for me and my sister, Emma, to write down our thoughts and feelings about Mum when we feel we need to.
Losing your mum is always hard, but it was good to know her last weeks were spent at St Luke's; they couldn't do enough for her and made her as comfortable as possible. All the staff were amazing, from the doctors and nurses to the catering and cleaning teams. Everyone was so friendly towards us, and that helped so much.”
Dedicate a light at our annual Festival of Light
Every winter, St Luke’s holds our Festival of Light here in our hospice gardens. This is a special time for us all to come together and remember our loved ones. It’s an opportunity to dedicate a light in memory of someone special, and their name will be included in our Book of Remembrance.
