St Luke's President’s Award

The President's Award is given to recognise those who have given distinguished or exceptional service to St Luke's, characterised through particular dedication and commitment to our cause and values. This award is given to a small number of deserving recipients, in recognition of their outstanding contribution. The award is for life, and will be presented by the President. Those receiving the award will be the subject of a feature in St Luke’s annual report in the year of the award; their name will be recognised in each subsequent annual report; and there will be an annual event for President’s Award holders. In this way the recipients will continue their long association with St Luke’s.

Mike was educated in Edinburgh, moved to Rochdale and trained as a Chartered Accountant in Manchester and was admitted as a member in 1967. The
bulk of his career has been in the Bus Industry and he was Deputy Chief Executive (as well as Finance Director) of Mainline Ltd, taking early retirement in 1998 to practice as a Chartered Accountant.

Mike became Honorary Treasurer of St Luke’s in 2003 and a Trustee of the Broomgrove Trust in 2006, of which he is currently Chair. Mike has been instrumental in being part of the team to drive through huge changes to St Luke’s: the physical structure of the Little Common Lane site (following the successful £5m capital appeal); doubling the number of our shops; the development of a proper professional fundraising department which now underpins the financial structure; and the purchase of Clifford House and its modification to meet our non-clinical needs to support the wider community.

Mike has also been a Director and Honorary Treasurer (Trustee) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport from 1991 to 2014 and was granted Honorary Fellowship in 2014.

He is the Patron and founding member of the Humberside Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, judging many Cavalier classes at dog shows over the years. He enjoys Golf, having been a director, chairman and later captain of Abbeydale Golf Club, and also is a keen fly fisherman, enjoying this hobby on breaks away with his family.
